A Model-Maker's Guide to HMAS Vampire [II] post 1970-71 Modernisation. Wardroom corner. Photo Ross Gillett.
3229. This wardroom photo aboard HMAS Vampire [II] thouight to have been taken in the 1960s BEFORE her $10m half-life modernisation. A photograph of the same setting at an ex-CO's dinner in 1986, when Vampire paid off, however, shows virtually no difference. The chintzy lamp on the bulkhead is later replaced by a fake coach lamp fitting.
PLEASE NOTE, however, the oval-shaped ventilation hatch in the bulkhead beside the porthole, above the heads of the young officers seated to the right. We will show an exterior detail of that hatch shortly.
Meantime, it is 1960s retro in HMAS Vampire's wardroom.
Here is a Kookaburra critique of the decor:
Harsh, sharp-edged laminated timber coffee tables stand in front to catch the knees. They complement the fake timber panelling above the foam-rubber-filled sofas and chairs, on which no full-sized man could sit comfortably for more than 10 minutes without beginning to sink through. A large XO, say, might end up with his chin on knees and backside on the deck.
We don't wish to be too critical, however, so will say nothing about the floral carpet, a possible off-cut from the pokies room of the Coogee Bay Hotel. No pokies here, and for all we know it may have been a perfectly good Axminster, waterproof, stain resistant, and standard Defence Department fare. Laminate panels on the upper bulkhead complete the interior decor.
This wardroom, we'd say, has the ambience of a Budget motel in the back-streets of Kings Cross, or the waiting room of a knockie-shop in Wanchai, a general area the men of HMAS Vampire would have known well. It features the sort of furnishings young men joined the Navy to avoid. Finally, with these few passing observations, we end our critique of HMAS Vampire's wardroom - for now.
